saint Mark, the evangelist

saint Mark, the evangelist

From the story of his life

Faithful follower of St. Peter, and st. Paul, apostle, evangelist and martyr, St. Marko becomes today’s patron of the day.

He was born in Jerusalem around the age of 10.

His name was John, called Mark according to the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 15:37).

And a young man followed Him, covered only with a sheet. They wanted to catch him too, but he left the sheet and ran away naked. – are the words of the Gospel according to Mark (Mk 14, 51-52). It is interesting that this very detail, which is brought by this Gospel alone, is interpreted by many as if it were about the evangelist himself.

As the nephew of Barnabas, he follows St. Paul, the apostle on his first journey, and then works with Barnabas in Cyprus.

My son Mark – is the name of our saint of the day, which is attributed to St. Peter, the apostle. It is interesting that the evangelist is with St. Peter, the apostle stayed in Rome, and there he wrote his Gospel, almost the shortest, but the oldest, given that it was written before 70.

Around the age of 68, he died a martyr’s death. His bones were only found in 828 by Venetian merchants and brought to Venice… With that, he becomes the protector of the city, as well as of the Republic of Venice, while the Venetians built him a magnificent basilica.

He is depicted with a lion… In fine art, almost legendary scenes from his life are often depicted, as well as a series of mosaics from the 13th century. century, which stand out especially in the Zeno chapel, the church of St. Mark in Venice.

In the interior of our homeland, the Republic of Croatia, there are almost two cathedrals dedicated to St. Mark, the evangelist… in Korčula and Makarska.

In Zagreb, on Grič, there is an ancient church of St. The brand, which has become almost a symbol of Gornji grad, is associated with many major historical events of the Croatian nation.

Protector of lawyers, jurists, notaries public, captives, prisoners, glaziers, stained glass artists, lions, Egypt… and many dioceses, settlements, parishes, as well as churches around the world, and Croatian regions… pray for us.
